Hurricane Helene NC 09/27/24
OUR EXPERIENCE
In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina we were faced with unprecedented damage, daily reminders of the devastation, depression, hopelessness, and then finally a reminder of how lucky we really were. It has been very difficult to watch as our towns were being swept away by water and slammed by strong winds and thousands falling trees. Lives have been lost, people are still missing, houses washed away, bridges to homes and neighborhoods are gone, places that we loved to go to are destroyed, schools are damaged, parks and playgrounds are covered under deep mud. The landscape in some areas especially around rivers and creeks has completely changed. We were without power, water or cell service for almost three weeks. Some roads are still impassable. Everywhere we turned it looked like a war zone.
Amid all the chaos, there were moments of solidarity. Neighbors helped each other, sharing resources and offering helping hand and support. Nature's unpredictability is always humbling, and we are grateful for the safety measures we had in place and the incredible support from our friends, neighbors and local authorities. The moments when we all checked in on each other, shared supplies, offered helping hands or just shared conversations and showed care for one another truly shone through. It will take a while for our beloved mountains to heal, rebuilt and get everything so somewhat normal. But North Carolina people are strong and resilient and we will not give up!
